Without doubt, the most famous and visited site in the country is the Galapagos Archipielago. Known for its extraordinary wildlife and the theory of the origin of species from Charles Darwin. The Galapagos Islands are located 970 km west of mainland ecuador and daily flights from Quito and Guayaquil take you to the 2 airports. The Galapagos consist of of 13 large volcanic islands, 6 smaller islands and 107 islets and rocks. Officially named "Archipelago of Colon" the Galapagos have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1978 and in 2001 Marine reserve. Puerto Ayora is the capital located on Santa Cruz Island and has the largest hotel infra-structure, followed by the other 2 inhabited islands of San Cristobal and Isabella. By far the best way to explore the Enchanted Islands is by a naturalist cruise that brings you to the restricted naturalist sites where the real Galapagos experience comes alive.
